Global Market Outlook for Photovoltaics until 2013

In 2008, the Global Photovoltaic (PV) market reached 5.6 GW and the cumulative PV power installed totalled almost 15 GW compared to 9 GW in 2007. Spain represented almost half of the new installations in 2008 with about 2.5 GW of new capacities, followed by Germany with 1.5 GW of additional connected. The US confirmed its trend with 342 MW of newly-installed PV systems, followed by South Korea which registered 274 MW of PV installations over the year. Italy connected almost 260 MW while France, Portugal, Belgium and the Czech Republic made good scores confirming Europe’s Global leadership in the deployment of solar PV energy.
A diversification of the market is taking place with countries adopting appropriate support policies, this is very good news for the PV industry and the environment.

2008 has been a year of challenges for our industry and the financial crisis that has affected the global economy has spared no industry sector. Despite a high market uncertainty, Energy Security of Supply, Global Climate Change and Energy crisis remain strong fundamentals and massive recourse to low carbon energies and renewables are inescapable imperatives on the medium and long terms. Photovoltaic (PV) energy is central to the energy and climate debate and at the highest level on the political agenda.

In 2008, as also during the years before, EPIA and Greenpeace had to update their scenarios in order to keep pace with the dynamic PV development. The global energy situation has changed even more drastically in just one year. If last year a window of opportunity for PV was opened; this year the entire front wall of the house has been torn down. The opportunity for action has not only become huge, it has become an economic necessity!
Energy prices are skyrocketing. Energy is becoming more and more unaffordable for more and more people all over the world. The global PV capacities have to grow faster and they can grow faster as Solar Generation V will show. The global PV industry is willing to take the challenge.

Building Integrated Photovoltaics - A New Design Opportunity for Architects

Photovoltaics (PV) convert light into electricity directly, without emissions and when it is needed. The system can be used decentralized. This means it can be deployed in close proximity to the user avoiding energy looses by long transportation.
PV that is integrated into the fabric of a building has become very popular in Europe. Known as Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) they can be used on both new and existing buildings. Their use in the building envelope is very varied and opens many opportunities for creative designers.
Many architects have already integrated PV successfully in their buildings.
