
Background:
On 10 January 2007, the EC announced in its “Renewable Energy Roadmap” that the EU indicative target of 12% renewables by 2010 “is unlikely to be met”. It therefore proposed to:
These targets were endorsed by the EU Heads of State at the European Summit of 8-9 March 2007. The EC published on 23 January 2008 a so-called “Climate and Energy” legislative package, including a proposal for a new Directive on the promotion of the use of renewable energies.
The new Directive was adopted by the EP on 17 December 2008 and has been published in the EU Official Journal.
