erec 45% binding target

EREC, the organisation representing Europe’s renewable energy industry, has called on the EU to adopt a legally binding renewable energy target of 45% of final energy consumption by 2030. Setting such a target would better equip the EU to deliver on its commitment to reducing greenhouse emissions by 80-95% by 2050 (compared to 1990 levels) and also help Europe maintain its increasingly challenged industrial leadership in renewable energy technologies.

As a member of EREC, EPIA supports the call for a legally binding renewable energy target. The message as outlined in the EREC report would be clear: the right political support would enable the creation of sustainable markets for RES; investors would have increased confidence in the sector; and manufacturers would be better able to keep improving technology – thereby reducing costs and making the target easier to achieve.

Under such conditions, the future of PV looks especially bright, and even brighter than the numbers suggested in the EREC report. According to EPIA’s SET For 2020 study, PV could supply up to 12% of the EU electricity market by 2020, assuming  that the right political framework is in place. The 45% RES binding target proposed by EREC would enable PV to reach even more ambitious levels by 2030.
