Council decision on 2030: Lacking Ambition

24 October 2014, Brussels – Today the European Council adopted a Climate and Energy framework for 2030. While the agreed EU-binding target of at least 27% for renewable energy is too low to unlock the full potential of solar, it represents an important signal that investments in solar photovoltaics will continue.

08 September 2014, Brussels – The Italian Senate adopted on 07 August 2014 a Decree-Law that introduces significant retroactive cuts of the guaranteed Feed-in Tariffs (FiT) and new taxes for self-consumed electricity. These new rules will seriously damage the investment climate for solar PV in the country and the image of Europe as a stable investment centre.

European Council calls for 30% Renewables target by 2030

03 September 2014, Brussels – EPIA supports the position of the European Heads of State on the target for renewables and calls for them to confirm this commitment during their meeting on 23-24 October. This is a step in the right direction and provides the opportunity for Europe to maintain a lead in the renewable energy sector. Nevertheless to be truly effective, national targets are still needed to deliver the energy transition that Europe requires to meet its CO2 reduction commitments.

EU Court of Justice confirms full validity of RES Directive

State Aid Rules: Commission denies potential of small-scale renewables

Brussels, 09 April 2014 - Today, the European Commission will present its new Environmental and Energy Aid Guidelines (EEAG) for the period 2014-2020. EPIA warns that this revised State Aid regime discriminates against small-scale generation and could badly harm the Member States’ ability to design efficient and adequate measures to support the uptake of different renewable energy technologies.

Brussels, 07 March 2014 - Gathered today in Brussels for their Annual General Meeting, EPIA elected a new Board of Directors. Oliver Schäfer, Director for Market Development and Policy, SunPower Corporation, has been elected as the new EPIA President. Three Vice-Presidents and four Directors were also elected.

Record-year for photovoltaic markets in 2013, Asia taking over the leading role

Brussels, 06 March 2014 – According to preliminary figures gathered by the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) and presented during its 9th Market Workshop in Brussels, the world added at least 37 GW of new PV capacity in 2013. The global PV cumulative installed capacity reached an impressive 136.7 GW at the end of last year, which represents a 35% increase compared to the year before.

New IEA’s report: Positive conclusions on power system integration of variable renewables

Brussels, 26 February 2014 – The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published today a report titled “The Power of Transformation” which offers an optimistic view on the integration of variable renewables, such as photovoltaics, into power systems. The report sheds light on the economics of the integration of variable renewables as well as on key power system features that can facilitate a cost-effective energy transition. Athens, Berlin, Bratislava, Brussels, The Hague, Lisbon, London Madrid, Paris, Prague, Rome, Sofia, Stockholm, Vienna, Warsaw, 30 January 2014 – The Europe-wide PV GRID consortium has released today a consultation document containing key recommendations for the adoption of technical solutions to ease the integration of photovoltaics (PV) into the distribution grid. Over the next three months, fifteen national workshops will take place throughout Europe presenting and discussing the project’s findings.

With a binding greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 40%, a supposedly binding EU-wide target of 27% for renewable energy and nothing on energy efficiency, the Commission’s proposals are falling far below the adequate level of ambition.

Brussels, 21 January 2014 - The European Commission will publish on 22 January 2014 a set of proposals for a 2030 Climate and Energy Framework which will include a Communication on “Energy prices and costs in Europe”. Parallel to that, a Staff Working Document on “Energy Economic Developments in Europe” will be presented in the coming days. The European Parliament Energy and Environment Committees call for a 2030 binding target for renewables

Brussels, 9 January 2014 – Members of the ITRE and ENVI Committees of the European Parliament today adopted a resolution calling the Council “to adopt and implement, for the EU 2030 climate and energy framework, a multi-faceted approach that is based on mutually-reinforcing, coordinated and coherent policies and ambitious binding targets on greenhouse gases emissions reduction, renewable energy sources and energy efficiency”.
