
The First European Solar Days will take place on the 16th and 17th May 2008 throughout Europe!
This event previously organized only in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and The Netherlands is for the first time extended to 6 more countries: France, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and the Netherlands.
The aim of the ESD is to raise awareness and promote the possibilities of solar power, Solar Thermal and Solar Photovoltaic, among both decision makers and the general public.
EPIA is particularly involved in the co-organization of the activities in Brussels.
After a successful launch in the Committee of Regions in Brussels on 28th January (pictured right) the European Solar Days (ESD) are now entering into their main phase of activity.
On Thursday 15 May 2008
A press conference, followed by a cocktail lunch, to introduce the European Solar Day to the international press.
Guest Speakers will include:
- Mr José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission (tbc)
- Mr Stavros Dimas, Commissioner for the Environment (tbc)
- Mr Janez Potocnik, Commissioner for Research (tbc)
A Dinner Debate at the European Parliament organized in co-operation with EREC and EUFORES on the topic of renewable energy, with special focus on the new directive and solar energy.
Guest speakers will include:
Ms Mechtild Rothe, Vice-President of the European Parliament (tbc)
On Friday 16 May 2008
Focusing more on the general public, a major outdoor event will be held in the “Parc Du Cinquantenaire” in the centre of Brussels, it will include:
- displays of solar energy technologies
- a ‘solar flower’ field (pictured below)
- educational activities for all ages
- the inauguration of a Solar obelisk and other solar power inspired objects
- a concert with top European acts in the evening

A pan-European event to bring the Sun closer to the people!
