Copenhagen hosts COP15, the official UN climate summit, in December 2009. A new global agreement to replace the Kyoto-agreement must be reached at this summit. But whatever happens at COP15, The Copenhagen Climate Exchange demonstrated that addressing global warming is much more than complex political agreements. Everybody can do something themselves.
At the Copenhagen Climate exchange popular organisations, innovative businesses and forward-looking municipalities from all over the world put their local solutions to global climate problems on display. And a wide number of different speakers – scientists and stakeholders within the global climate sector - discussed new ways of dealing with Climate Change.

CEPS Meeting: Implementing the EU’s renewable energy targets for 2020
4 November 2009, Brussels, Belgium
The EU has set itself a series of Climate Change and energy sustainability targets for 2020 – on paper. It is now up to Member States, and subject to Commission review, to transform those commitments into reality – inter alia by putting into place the required National Renewable Energy Action Plans.
2020 is just around the corner: What kind of energy mix should Member States strive for and how best can they attain their renewable energy targets? What kind of policy mix – fiscal, regulatory and other measures – should governments put in place to bring about the necesary changes? What is the role for business – energy producers, utilities, network operators, distributors, engineering and technology firms, and large energy users – and how will they be affected?
Together with the EC, the European Wind Energy Association and E.ON, EPIA will deal with these questions in a CEPS lunchtime meeting taking place on 4 November 2009.

After the implementation of the Federal Investment Tax Credit and in the very promising green stimulus plans of President Obama, Gainesville (Florida, USA) was the first municipality to introduce a Feed-in Tariff Policy in the United States.
The Florida Alliance for Renewable Energy (FARE), with support from the Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) and the Alliance for Renewable Energy (ARE), had invited EPIA to participate in a conference on “Effective Renewable Energy Policies: Stimulating Job Creation, Long Term Investments, and Improving Energy Security” featuring discussions on Feed-in Tariffs, Net Metering and Rebates on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009 in Tallahassee, Florida.
The focus of the conference was on the deployment of renewable energy in Florida resulting in jobs and energy security. Experts from around the world and participants from various stakeholder organisations discussed policies to stimulate vast investment in renewable energy to increase energy security and job creation in Florida. Building on Governor Crist’s vision of 20% renewables by 2020, this event provided first-hand experiences from Florida, other states and European countries on what policies are most effective in achieving renewable targets.
An EPIA delegation including Dr. Murray Cameron, Chief Operating Officer from Phoenix Solar and Vice-President of EPIA, Detlef Rogall, Corporate Strategy & Business Development from Phoenix Solar, Boris Schubert, President of Q-Cells International USA Corp., Dr. Sebastian Canadell, International Director and CEO of Isofoton distribution and Poly companies, Juergen Krehnke, President of SMA America, and Adel El Gammal, Secretary General of EPIA, attended the event and took the opportunity to meet with high-level decision-makers from Florida, such as the Governors Energy & Climate Office, the Public Service Commission, the Chamber of Commerce, and Legislative Committees interested in energy and economic development. The objective of these meetings was to better understand Florida as a potential market and begin formulating concrete plans, and to discuss with key officials on how they can replicate or even surpass the investment and jobs growth of solar power (both in speed and scale) as experienced by Germany, Spain, and other European countries in recent years and ultimately, support the Gainesville initiative as a case model to be widely replicated throughout the United States.
