The Photovoltaic Network Integration: Challenges and Opportunities conference was organised by EPIA in the framework of the EU SUNRISE project.
The overall aim of the SUNRISE project, as well as the aim of the conference, was to provide a forum for constructive dialogue between the PV industry and the European utilities on how the integration of solar photovoltaic systems into the European electricity supply can be managed in a win-win situation for all parties.
The European Utilities EDF and ENEL, as well as other stakeholders from the PV sector, like the inverter manufacturer SMA, presented the challenges and opportunities which an increasing number of PV distributed systems implies in the different electricity systems and markets.
The added value of Solar Photovoltaic electricity to the peak power supply was shown through examples of different European projects by ISET, on the one hand, which emphasised the need to cooperate with other RES (e.g. wind power and biomass) in order to maximise the value of PV, and, on the other hand, by SAFT, which showed that the use of energy storage for residential systems could, in some cases, be the best solution.
The workshop fulfilled the expectations of the organisers and project coordinator: it provided an excellent platform for discussion with over 90 participants representing the PV Industry, European utilities, decision-makers, electricity regulators and related stakeholders from the Energy sector.
A follow-up event will be organised in the second half of 2009 in which the final results of the SUNRISE project will be presented and other players will have the opportunity to present their positions and experience regarding PV network integration. More information on the follow-up event will soon be available on the EPIA and SUNRISE websites (www.pvsunrise.eu)
